We Walk for Yorkshire 2024

This May I'm joining people across Yorkshire who are coming together to walk 31,000 miles to raise money for vital research which will help save lives in Yorkshire.

31,000 is the number of people who are diagnosed with cancer every year in Yorkshire.

People are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire than in most other parts of England and, tragically, too many people die. Yorkshire Cancer Research exists to change this. With the help of people across the region, the charity funds vital research and pioneers innovative new services for people with cancer.

Every step counts, and every pound I am able to raise will help save lives in Yorkshire.

Well we did it...with over 500 people taking part, 31,000 miles has been walked in 31 days, representing the 31,000 people diagnosed with cancer every year in Yorkshire. Over £51,000 has also been raised, which is a brilliant amount in such a short time.

I beat my own personal objectives of walking a marathon in May, by walking 29 miles, and raising £1,786.94 (including Gift Aid), so a massive thank you to everyone who supported me.

I also went on BBC Radio York last week to promote the Active Together training that I have been benefiting from, to help spread the word and to encourage other people recovering from cancer to take part.

Getting active DOES help people recover from cancer, and the money raised from this sponsored walk WILL help so many more people to get involved - thank you! Cs x

This week the Yorkshire Cancer Research centre at Hornbeam Park in Harrogate are officially launching their Active Together programme. A scheme designed to help cancer patients get back on their feet post ops with personal training, counselling and nutrition advice.

The centre also has a great shop and cafe, so worth a visit too!

I have been one of the lucky people trialling the weekly personal training and counselling following 3 major cancer ops in 10mths last year and I will be honest that it has been a complete lifeline for me. Losing some of the use of my right arm from lymph node removal, and months of treatment and ops really takes it out of you.

Their goal is to open enough centres across Yorkshire so that every cancer patient gets the same support.

This month they are launching ‘We walk for Yorkshire’ walking 31,000 miles to acknowledge the 31,000 people diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire every year. I have signed up to walk the equivalent of a marathon over May, and will be joining the team at the centre on Monday 13 May kicking off a 2hr walk at 1pm.

I’m also doing a full page article for the centre as a thank you for all the support they are giving me.

You won’t get me running marathons but given how directly this project has helped me, it is my chance to give something back. If you can spare even £5, it will help to give someone else the support that genuinely does get cancer patients active and supports them.
