Tour de Walkshire 2021

My Activity Tracking

My target 100 mi

I’m taking part in Tour de Walkshire this year to help more people survive cancer in Yorkshire.

Every week in Yorkshire nearly 600 people are told they have cancer. Yorkshire Cancer Research is an independent cancer charity funding pioneering research to prevent, diagnose and treat this condition.

This May they’ve teamed up with Welcome to Yorkshire for Tour de Walkshire. I’ve chosen my distance and will be walking, running or cycling to raise money for this vital cause. Please support my efforts and help more people in Yorkshire survive cancer.

My Updates

11th June, 2021

Dear Folk of Walkshire - and beyond

'Surprise' donations yesterday carried the total to a level of disbelief:  over £1,500.

I'm so grateful - and proud - for all who have given so generously.  They are the true heroes, unsung, often anonymous, who are the very backbone of our land.

£1,532 - and counting!!
Six times my original hoped-for target.
Add to that a further £324 in Gift Aid and the grand total is approaching £2,000.

'Thank you' Tour de Walkshire and Yorkshire Cancer Research for motivating me to get off the couch and walk.  I'm continuing, although not updating beyond 31st May.

I love my walks; the colours and sounds of the countryside are constantly changing - there is always something new to  observe, which keeps one's mind fit and alert, just as the exercise maintains the body.

I'm 50 again!!!

Wednesday 19th May
The title should read:  David, the Ecstatic Hiker!

My original fundraising target was an unlikely £250.  When that was reached, in quite short time, I wondered if I could reach £550.  After that, a new target became £650.  Right now, 19th May, I homing in on £800.

I wonder how many other fundraisers have been so similarly surprised to have exceeded their original targets?  I'm guessing it's the majority.

'Thank you' to all the generous folk of Walkshire.

David, the Happy Hiker

Sunday 16th May
Borrowing the style of Adrian Mole, being an 81 year young man and blessed thus far with good health, I could not ignore the opportunity to accept joining the Yorkshire Cancer Research charity challenge.  What a worthy cause.

Along the simple Registration path I was invited to create a target distance and a hoped-for sum through donations.

I thought I could manage 100 miles and would try to raise £250.

Today is my mid-month progress Report:
I was astounded to pass £250 after one week - people are so generous that it restores ones belief in human kindness - a new sum had to be revised, and I wondered if £550 could be reached.

Today - one week later - I have passed 60 of my 100 miles and the donations have reached £609, with more promises to be translated into £'s.
A second new target has been set for £700 - who knows?

I'm sustained on my daily walks by thinking of and giving thanks for - not only those wonderful folk who have supported my efforts - all the caring people who have responded so generously to enhance the welfare of others.

Personally, I hope the good people of Walkshire will have an opportunity to show their Good Samaritan natures again next year!  After all, we all know that Walkshire is God's own county.
