Step Out For Yorkshire

I’m stepping out for Yorkshire Cancer Research this May. The challenge I have set myself is 2014 Tour De France (and beat the border) , the equivalent of 700 miles, and it's all to raise money for life-saving cancer research in Yorkshire.

My target 700 mi

I have decided to attempt the two Tour De France stages that took place in Yorkshire in 2014, over the course of a weekend. This is serious challenge, even more so for someone (me!) who only took up road cycling just over one year ago...

1 in 2 people will experience cancer in their lifetime. Yorkshire Cancer Research is an independent cancer charity funding pioneering research to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer in the region.

I will be riding the Tour De France stages that took place in Yorkshire in 2014. The stages go from Harrogate to Sheffield - which is fitting as the Charity's office is in Harrogate and our new Active Together programme to help cancer patients get ready for , and recover from, treatment is based in Sheffield.

Stage one is hard, very hard for me, at 200km (125 miles) with 2600m (8600ft) of climbing.

Stage two however is a different beast - it's much harder, about the same length but with 4000m of climbing (13,000ft) .

Erm.... help....

Actually, I will have a bit of help from few strong riders doing stints along the way with me. Indeed many will be from the Active Together - Sheffield Team (based at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, Sheffield Hallam University). One of these people, Professor Rob Copeland, Director of the Centre, may well be joining me for the whole two stages!

My Updates

I did it (most of it at least!)

Wednesday 1st Jun
So I managed to do the whole of day 1! That was 202km and 2700m of climbing.
Had a low moment at 180km but the people who joined me that day - Matt, Benn and Harriet - helped me get back on track!

However, that evening I think my body went into some sort of shock. I couldn’t sleep properly , I couldn’t eat and I was hot and cold at the same time!!

Somehow I got up the next day , forced some porridge down and got back on the bike do day 2.

I felt ok for the first 80/90km. Then my knee started play up.

Given I had to drive home from Sheffield at the end of the day, and given how bad I had felt the night before, we cut the route a bit shorter and headed straight to Sheffield. In the end day 2 was 150km and 2500m of climbing - still very impressive if I do say so my self!

Thank you for all the support and donations - it’s been a brilliant experience.

Stage 2

Wednesday 25th May
Stage route is done, and we've added an extra 500m of climbing - just for fun.... (erm....)

Logistics mean starting in Harrogate rather than York , but the length of the ride will still be 200km

Stage 1

Wednesday 25th May
It's getting closer - Stage 1 Route has been completed. We will be starting in Harrogate and joining the the Tour De France Route at the point at which the race was actually started. No support car for the day so we'll need some cafe stops!

Ow....

Saturday 14th May
Did a 85km ride with lots of climbing (1900m) taking in some of the stage 2 route. It was hard.

How on earth am I going to do almost three times as much in one day (having ridden 200km and 2700m of climbing the day before)??

The Routes

Saturday 14th May
I am working on the routes. Some changes will be required as I won't have closed roads nor can I legally ride on a few sections of the original tour routes.

Stage one is hard, very hard for me, at 200km (125 miles) with 2600m (8600ft) of climbing.

Stage two however is a different beast - it's much harder, about the same length but with 3500m (11,500ft) . Erm.... help....
