Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial - The Last of Us

We Walk for Yorkshire in your Workplace

Saltaire to Leeds

Saturday morning, the group met at Saltaire train station at roughly 11am.  Once we had all gathered, we set off down the hill to the canal tow path.  Heading towards Leeds centre and our finish line.
The weather was  mild and overcast for the majority of the day, with the Sun attempting to show itself a couple of times, but never for long periods.
From Saltaire the first noticeable area you come across is Shipley, we had planned to stop here as our first collection and refreshment spot, sadly we had arrived too early and it was still closed.  Undeterred I knew of a back up stop a few more miles ahead.  The scenery along the canal is beautiful and typical Yorkshire for this time of year.  One of the woods we passed by had a stunning ground cover of Bluebells and the white flowers of wild garlic.  It wasn't too long until we hit our first stop of the day, a unplanned but welcoming The George and Dragon, at Apperley bridge.  As we were served cups of tea, and we enjoyed a quick lunch break, Sue had made a Lemon Drizzle cake for us all to share.  It was a welcomed sugar boost to get us up and walking again.
Back along the canal to Rodley and our next stop.  This is where we spotted a Heron relaxing by the side of the river.  Lots of people walking, cycling and enjoying the day by the canal, giving us a cheery hello.  The barges with their crew waving as we passed by.
Getting into Rodley we found the lovely and newly refurbish gardens to sit and enjoy a break at The Railway.  We had only just taken our seat, when a group of girls came to us asking if they could donate to our collection tins.  This was a good sign of things to come.  The owner of The Railway gave permission to collect donations from their patrons.  This is when Kev leapt to his feet and did the rounds.  Kev looked to be in his element, chatting and explaining who we were and and why we were collecting.
Rodley is a small village with lots of homes Canalside, along with lots of barges moored up.  The next stop along the way was Newley, between Kirkstall and Horsforth at The Abbey Inn, rumoured to have been a regular spot for the monks at Kirkstall Abbey.  Its even rumoured to have a tunnel that ran for the Abbey to the Inn, that the monks used.  However I don't think anyone knows where it is, could have been a well guarded secret.  At The Abbey Inn we picked up 2 more members of the team,  Angelika and Chris.  Fresh face and feet gave us the boost we needed for the longest and last leg of the walk.  Another team member let us know she was going to run from the city centre along the canal and join us for the walk back.
Setting off once again towards Leeds we kept up the pace, looking out for our runner.  Passing through Kirkstall then Armley, making a joke of any runner coming towards us that it was Sara.  After what felt like a long time we finally met with with her.  I had started to think she had run past us while we were still at The Abbey Inn.
The last couple of miles were welcomed with a new vista, we had left the trees and nature behind for the urban jungle of apartment building and offices.  With train lines running overhead.  The canal was at its busiest with city dwellers enjoying an evening walk.  With the final destination in sight we started to pick up our pace again to reach the finish line.  We were welcomed by other member of the team that had been unable to attend the whole walk.  Members of the general public were again coming to us with donations and sharing their reasons why the charity is important to them.
This was our 4th annual walk along the canal, and our 5th year as a team collecting sponsors.  We look forward to doing it all again next year.

Setting off fresh at Saltaire

Saltaire to Leeds

Leeds Lung Health Check team will again be taking to Leeds to Liverpool canal for We Walk for Yorkshire.  We will be setting off from Saltaire railway station to Leeds railway station.   The team is made up of current staff and member of the team that have moved on to other projects.
We will be stopping off along the way to collect donations and a no doubt needed refreshing drink.  This will be the 4th and longest walk for the team.  Doing a nice long walk before several members of the team do the 3 Peaks later in May.

We Walk for Yorkshire 2025

This May we're joining people across Yorkshire who are coming together to raise money for vital research that will help save lives in Yorkshire.

Every 17 minutes, someone in Yorkshire is told they have cancer. People are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire than in most other parts of England and, tragically, too many people die.

This May, I would like to help change this, by taking part in We Walk for Yorkshire to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research. Thanks to supporters, the charity funds vital research and pioneers innovative new services for people with cancer.

Every step counts and every pound I am able to raise will help save lives in Yorkshire.
