I’m taking part in We Walk for Yorkshire, the annual walking challenge organised by Yorkshire Cancer Research. I’ll be joining others across Yorkshire and beyond, to collectively walk 35,000 miles in May to help fund life-saving cancer research.

Why 35,000? That’s the number of people who are told they have cancer in Yorkshire every year. By walking in May, I’m helping save lives in our region.

Over the last 18 months, cancer has hit my family hard. We lost both my grandmother and mother-in-law here in Yorkshire, and seeing first hand the impact cancer has, not just on the person, but on everyone around them, is something that I'll never forget. 

During that time, I also had to navigate the cancer support and treatment available across Yorkshire with them. It really opened my eyes to how important research, funding and local services are. Both of them benefited from treatments and drugs that likely wouldn't have existed 30 years ago, and that progress only happens because of charities, research and people continuing to support causes like this. 

Whilst this challenge feels personal to me, I realise my family wasn't the only one and unfortunately won't be the last so I'm doing  what I can to help support life saving research here in Yorkshire, in the hope that families get longer with the people they love.
