We Walk (or ride up hills) for Yorkshire 2025

This May I'm joining people across Yorkshire who are coming together to raise money for vital research that will help save lives in Yorkshire.

Every 17 minutes, someone in Yorkshire is told they have cancer. People are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire than in most other parts of England and, tragically, too many people die.

This May, I would like to help change this, by taking part in We Walk (or in my case 'ride') for Yorkshire to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research. Thanks to supporters, the charity funds vital research and pioneers innovative new services for people with cancer.

30,000 people are told they have cancer every year in Yorkshire. This has inspired me to ride my trusty bike up 30,000ft in May. For context this is the height of mount Everest. Yes , that's right dear reader, EVEREST!

It will be an uphill battle, but not as much as an uphill battle as having a cancer diagnosis I imagine. Every pound raised will go towards life saving research!

My updates

Ow….bad news …

Wednesday 14th May
Did a morning ride yesterday …. I somehow unclipped from the pedal when standing up and have hurt my shin quite badly. Blood and large bumps are involved  …. I won’t post a picture…
I finished the ride and added 1,296ft.
Now at a total of 23,550ft.
I’m away for work so hopefully a few days rest and the shin won’t be too painful to ride, but it’s very sore again today :-(

More going uphill!! 3,822ft.

Sunday 11th May
22,254ft total - is the summit of Everest in sight?

Another 4,315ft

Friday 9th May
That was fun - 4 x up and down Norwood Edge on top of some other bits of climbing - quite a fun ride that one! Now at 18,432ft Had a smoothie and some lunch in the Yorkshire Cancer Research on the way home ! Yummy!

Another ride

Thursday 8th May
Another 2,707ft added. Total of 14,177ft.

Another Ride done

Wednesday 7th May
I don’t like getting up early….
But I did it anyway and rode on Zwift - and did the Climb ‘Bealach na Ba’. A replication of the climb in Scotland.
There are stretches of 15% to 20% gradient and fortunately (or unfortunately) my indoor bike can tilt up 20% to simulate that. I’ve also so set Zwift to 100% trainer difficultly for all my indoor rides (that means it’s like pedalling on that real gradient - if the gears don’t go low enough then it’s harder to pedal like outdoors) - so - ow….

Added 2,165ft - now at 11,470ft!

This is harder than I was expecting….

Monday 5th May
And it I thought it was hard to start with…

Another 1,339ft added today.

9,374/30,000ft done.

Progress Update !

Sunday 4th May
1 Virtual Indoor ride and 2 outdoor rides. 7,975ft climbed out of a target of 30,000ft. Follow me on Strava to see details. https://www.strava.com/athletes/43293521 My legs hurt.

Yorkshire is beautiful!

Sunday 4th May
Putting on smile , but my legs hurt!
